San Juan is a city that offers something to delight everyone. It is a Latin American city with Spanish-based culture, mixed with African traditions and Taino culture.
The harbor of San Juan was long coveted by many and, therefore, often under attack. Many old forts are found here. Among them are
· El Castillo San Felipe del Morro “El Morro”, a 16th-century citadel that lies on the northwestern-most point of the islet of San Juan
· El Castillo de San Cristobal, a Spanish fort
· Palacio de Santa Catalina “La Fortaleza”, now the official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico, was built between 1533 and 1540 to defend the harbor
· Castillo de San Jeronimo, located in the entrance of Condado, the Puerto Rico lagoon in San Juan, defended San Juan from attacks by Sir Francis Drake in 1595
Museo de Arte (Museum of Art), 299 Av. Jose de Diego, Santurce, is Puerto Rico’s most important gallery. It is a state-of-the-art showcase for the island nation’s rich cultural heritage.
The Butterfly People, 257 Calle de la Cruz, Old San Juan, 787-723-2432, (www.butterflypeople.com), is the world’s largest gallery devoted to butterflies and has the world’s largest butterfly collection. It is a place to view and acquire pieces.
Jardin Botanico is a lush tropical garden with some 200 species of vegetation, including an orchid garden, a palm garden with over 125 species of palms, and Monet’s Garden, which is an adaptation of Monet’s own aquatic garden with its water lilies. It also exhibits a fine collection of modern sculpture by renowned artists of Puerto Rico and Hispanic America
Bacardi’s distillery is the world’s largest rum distillery. Here you can sample the goods or buy some liquid souvenirs. The tour is completely free, and you can take a tram from building to building.
San Juan is replete with restaurants, in all price ranges, that offer a wide variety of cuisines, and many offer live music. The Café Puerto Rico at Calle O’Donnell 208 specializes in Creole cooking. La Bombonera on Calle San Francisco serves authentic local cuisine and is inexpensive. Ajili Mojili Caribbean San Juan at Av. Ashford 1006 is where the locals come to eat. At the Parrot Club at Calle Fortaleza 363, Old San Juan, live music, either Brazilian, salsa or Latina jazz is offered nightly.
San Juan has bars and discotheques all-around the city, from Old San Juan to even the southern part of the city that stay open to 3:00 - 4:00 AM.
