Postdoctoral Research, New York University School of Medicine

A postdoctoral position is available at New York University School of Medicine to study brain AMPA receptor mechanisms in rodent models of restricted and excessive caloric intake, and interaction with drugs of abuse.  The traineeship is supported by an Institutional Training Grant from NIH, involves collaborative co-sponsorship by Drs. Kenneth Carr and Edward Ziff, and is limited to US citizens and permanent residents.  The trainee will be a member of the NYUSoM Center of Excellence on Addiction (a multidisciplinary Center addressing dependence on illicit and prescribed drugs, alcohol and tobacco, as well as behaviors such as gambling, eating disorders and sexual risk-taking).  Start date is flexible from Summer through late Fall 2009.

Postdoctoral Position, Cannabis Misuse: Treatment, and Behavioral, Genetic, and Neurobiological Risk Factors, Center for Addiction Research, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

We are seeking an early career scientist interested in pursuing postdoctoral training focused on marijuana/cannabis misuse and addiction with a special emphasis on health disparities.  Fellows will participate in the conduct and analysis of data from three active randomized clinical trials (R01s): one evaluating behaviorally-based treatments for adolescent marijuana abuse, a parallel trial for adolescent alcohol abuse and, a third trial comparing computer-based and behaviorally-based treatments.  Research opportunities include a focus on health disparities and outcomes, behavioral, genetic, and neuro-cognitive mediators and moderators of outcome, and the role of parent and parenting in adolescent outcomes. Fellows will have opportunities to develop new research projects in related areas in collaboration with CAR faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and other members of the UAMS faculty, including those involved with our neuro-imaging research group.  Fellows seeking clinical licensure have an option to provide clinical care under supervision.

            Responsibilities may include: assist with coordination of the randomized clinical trial(s), supervision of bachelor’s and master’s level research assistants, data management and analysis, and manuscript preparation. Fellows will have the opportunity to be the lead author on manuscripts, and to participate in preparation of grant applications. Overall, the fellowship provides excellent preparation for an academic/scientific career.

            Fellowship is expected to last 2 years, with the possibility of a 3rd year. Salary is $41,000. Desired start date is between July 1 and September 1.  Applicants must have completed doctoral training in psychology or a related field and have research experience. Training Program for Addiction Medicine in Primary Care (funded by NIH), UCLA Department of Family Medicine

The Department of Family Medicine is committed to training the next generation of professionals on the topic of “addiction medicine in primary care.” A NIDA-funded training program provides resources to physicians and postdoctoral fellows interested in this research direction. We are currently recruiting 1 M.D. and 1 Ph.D. to commit for two years to conduct intensive research on addiction medicine in primary care. Washington University announces the availability of a Post-doctoral research fellowship with the Epidemiology and Prevention Research Center.  The fellowship is with Dr. Linda Cottler’s NIDA T32 Training Program in Drug Abuse Epidemiology, Services and Prevention Research.  The Program provides outstanding training for fellows in epidemiology research with an emphasis on interdisciplinary studies. The NIDA T32 Training Program, established in 1999, offers two to three years of postdoctoral training at Washington University School of Medicine, which ranks 3rd in NIH funding, and has a rich, 119-year history of success in research, education and patient care. The Program is noted for its public health focus, encompassing prevention and intervention studies with high risk populations, prescription drug abuse and veteran samples.  It also strongly emphasizes training in the responsible conduct of science and community-based research.

An apprenticeship model is blended with didactic teaching to train fellows to form writing groups, write papers, review manuscripts for publication, teach, and participate in research.  In addition, fellows have a unique opportunity to earn the Master of Psychiatric Epidemiology (MPE) through Washington University School of Medicine as part of training.

Imaging Research Postdoctoral Fellowship for Future Academic Physicians, Johns Hopkins university

One to 2 years formal NIH funded training program focusing on fundamentals of Neuroimaging research at the post MD level is available immediately and funded by 4 institutes (NIDA, NIAAA, NIBIB-primary, and NCI.) Although based in the Department of Radiology, Johns Hopkins University, candidates can come from multiple clinical disciplines especially Psychiatry, Neurology as well as Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, preferably an accredited training program (e.g. by ACGME). The primary purpose is to train potential academic physicians to encourage use of neuroimaging in their future research careers especially for substance abuse/alcoholism research. Highest priority will be given to those who are entering or are in a clinical residency or beginning a clinical Fellowship in their specialties. Full time training will include mentorship by Neuroimaging faculty. Research topics can be basic, translational or clinical across departments but should have a relationship to the mission of NIDA/NIAAA (drug abuse/alcoholism). Arrangements with applicant's home institution and collaboration will be considered. Formal didactic coursework will enhance the educational experience.

Positions are available immediately spring of 2009 with additional positions available through 2011. Three training positions require a minimum of 1-year renewable upon mutual agreement and progress.

The Yale University Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA; http://cira.med.yale.edu) is offering Post-Doctoral Fellowships through its Interdisciplinary HIV Prevention Training Program. CIRA seeks to prevent HIV infection and reduce the negative consequences of HIV in vulnerable and underserved populations through theory-based, interdisciplinary research and by training of the next generation of HIV/AIDS scientists. CIRA draws upon the expertise of HIV prevention scientists at Yale University from a broad array of 20 disciplines. Yale University provides an exceptional training environment to provide Fellows with the skills to advance prevention research and to address future challenges of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and other emerging diseases. 

Each Fellowship will run for a 2 year training period. Fellows are trained within CIRA, working closely with a research preceptor from among CIRA’s Primary Training Faculty members.  Fellows will be encouraged to write articles for publications and prepare an extramural grant application in an HIV-related area. Postdoctoral Fellowship in Genetics of Behavioral Risk and Alcohol Abuse/Alcoholism, University of Michigan Addiction Research Center (UMARC)

 Training grant position is available for 2-3 years of postdoctoral training in behavioral genetics in the University of Michigan Addiction Research Center (UMARC)

 The project involves an ongoing collaboration to study the genetics of behavioral risk relevant to alcohol and other drug abuse in a longitudinal (>20 years) sample of nearly 500 families enriched for alcohol and other substance abuse. Psychological and behavioral as well as substance abuse variables are available on close to 2000 individuals, in about half of them since early childhood. A subset of the sample has been genotyped for >1000 SNPs in >100 candidate genes. The data will allow genetic association studies, gene x gene, gene x environment and behavioral pathway analyses. Additional genotyping may also be performed by the fellow as needed although the major effort will be on analysis. 

Candidates should be recent (<5 years) Ph.D.s in psychology, genetics, bioinformatics, or statistics who seek cross-training in the other disciplines. The Interdisciplinary Alcohol Research Training Program (IART) at the University of Pittsburgh announces an opening for a two-year fellowship. The IART Program at the University of Pittsburgh prepares students for careers in alcohol research. Alcohol research requires investigators to be trained in the most current and sophisticated methods of both Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and who understand the application of these methodologies to the specific questions raised in alcohol research. The Substance Abuse Research Center (UMSARC) exists to stimulate the study of psychoactive substance abuse of all kinds and to extend knowledge regarding substance abuse prevention.  As an interdisciplinary center we are comprised of over 115 individuals from 29 departments at the University of Michigan.   The purpose of the training grant is to prepare researchers and scholars to expand their work beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries in preparation for work in the field of substance abuse research. A postdoctoral position is available immediately for work on a collaborative multidisciplinary project between Dr. Ron Kuczenski’s and Dr. Athina Markou’s laboratories. This position will involve the study
of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying methamphetamine dependence and neurotoxicity, and how excessive exposure to methamphetamine leads to psychotic-like states. Sophisticated /in vivo/ and /in vitro/ neurochemical techniques, including /in vivo/ microdialysis, as well as behavioral techniques, including intravenous methamphetamine self-administration, will be used. Applicants should have a strong background in neurochemistry, psychopharmacology and/or behavioral neuroscience, with an interest in drug dependence and psychiatric disorders.
