Postdoctoral Positions in Neuroscience (Areas of Methamphetamine Dependence and Psychosis), University of California at San Diego, CA

A postdoctoral position is available immediately for work on a collaborative multidisciplinary project between Dr. Ron Kuczenski’s and Dr. Athina Markou’s laboratories. This position will involve the study
of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying methamphetamine dependence and neurotoxicity, and how excessive exposure to methamphetamine leads to psychotic-like states. Sophisticated /in vivo/ and /in vitro/ neurochemical techniques, including /in vivo/ microdialysis, as well as behavioral techniques, including intravenous methamphetamine self-administration, will be used. Applicants should have a strong background in neurochemistry, psychopharmacology and/or behavioral neuroscience, with an interest in drug dependence and psychiatric disorders. Experience with /in vivo/ microdialysis, neurochemical analytical techniques, rodent survival surgery and/or intravenous drug self-administration are desirable but not required. The successful applicant will be a highly motivated individual with good communication skills, interest and experience in neuroscience, drug dependence and psychiatric disorders, and ability to work independently. The applicant should have at least 2-4 first author publications accepted in quality peer-reviewed journals. The abilities to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary research team are essential. Postdoctoral training positions are available immediately in the Scripps Center for Cannabis Addiction Neurobiology (SCCAN). This NIDA-funded Center has been recently established in the Committee on the Neurobiology of Addictive Disorders of The Scripps Research Institute to study the neuropsychological, behavioral, physiological and neurochemical impact of cannabis addiction under the direction of Barbara J. Mason, Ph.D.. Additional components of the Center are directed by Drs. L. H. Parsons, Ph.D. and M. A. Taffe, Ph.D. of TSRI and Dr. S. F. Tapert, Ph.D. of the University of California, San Diego. The clinical research components of this translational center examine neuropsychological, affective and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging correlates of cannabis discontinuation in adolescent and young adult cannabis smokers. Preclinical components of the center examine the
behavioral, physiological and neurochemical consequences of chronic exposure to, and withdrawal from, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in adolescent and young adult nonhuman primate and rodent models.

Postdoctoral Positions, Substance Dependence Research Group, Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University, New York

We are pleased to announce that two postdoctoral positions are available immediately at the Substance Dependence Research Group in the Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University. One position involves studies in genetic epidemiologic research. The applicant must have completed training in epidemiology, genetics, psychology or a related discipline and have strong quantitative skills. Previous experience working with national surveys and/or genetic data preferred. The second position involves clinical studies with emphasis on innovations in behavioral interventions. The applicant must have completed training in psychology, social work or a related discipline (training in motivational interviewing a plus) and should have a strong interest in integrating innovative technologies and behavioral studies.

For both positions, a Ph.D. or M.D. and demonstrated ability to publish are required. Postdoctoral Positions in Drug Abuse Research, The Center for Drug Abuse Research Translation (CDART), University of Kentucky

The Center for Drug Abuse Research Translation (CDART) at the University of Kentucky, which is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, announces the availability of postdoctoral research positions.  A central mission of CDART is to facilitate the translation of research findings between the basic and prevention sciences.  Faculty within the Center have basic and applied interests in the socio-behavioral sciences and neurosciences.  There are 4 major ongoing projects in the Center, and successful candidates would become affiliated primarily with one project.  Project 1 involves the behavioral and neurochemical evaluation of individual differences in novelty seeking related to drug self-administration using a rat model, which is supervised by Drs. Michael Bardo and Linda DwoskinProject 2, which is supervised by Dr. Thomas Kelly, examines individual differences in drug abuse vulnerability using clinical behavioral pharmacology and neuroimaging methodologies.  Project 3 involves examining the interrelations among personality traits, process level variables, and substance (mis)use in the context of a large longitudinal study; this project is supervised by Drs. Washington University announces the immediate availability of a Post-doctoral research fellowship with the Epidemiology and Prevention Research Center.  The fellowship is with Dr. Linda Cottler’s NIDA T32 Training Program in Drug Abuse Comorbidity, Prevention and Biostatistics.  The Program provides outstanding training for fellows in epidemiology research with an emphasis on interdisciplinary studies. The NIDA T32 Training Program, established in 1999, offers two to three years of postdoctoral training at Washington University School of Medicine, which ranks 3rd in NIH funding, and has a rich, 117-year history of success in research, education and patient care. The Program is noted for its public health focus, encompassing prevention and intervention studies with high risk populations, prescription drug abuse and veteran samples.  It also strongly emphasizes training in the responsible conduct of science and community-based research.

An apprenticeship model is blended with didactic teaching to train fellows to form writing groups, write papers, review manuscripts for publication, teach, and participate in research.  In addition, fellows have a unique opportunity to earn the Master of Psychiatric Epidemiology (MPE) through Washington University School of Medicine as part of training.

Postdoctoral Position, Study of Neural Mechanisms involved in Drug Abuse, Arizona State University

The Department of Psychiatry is a premier department in psychiatry, internationally recognized for its pioneer work in substance abuse and psychiatric epidemiology, as well as for genetic epidemiology of psychiatric and substance use disorders. A postdoctoral research position is available effective June 1, 2007 to study the mechanism(s) by which endogenous and exogenous cannabinoids affect macrophage and microglial responsiveness to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and to its virus-specified gene products Tat and gp120. Particular emphasis will be placed on definition of the role of these cannabinoids in modulating the inducible expression of cytokines and chemokines and of the functional relevance of cannabinoid receptors in this process. Experience in cell culture, molecular biology, immunology, and/or immunopharmacology is strongly recommended. Applicants must have completed doctoral training. Postdoctoral Position in Nicotine Dependence, Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation
The Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation (MMRF) has a postdoctoral position available to study behavioral and neuropharmacological aspects of nicotine dependence using animal models. The successful candidate will join a NIH-funded multidisciplinary group currently focusing on development of 1) novel pharmacotherapies for nicotine dependence, 2) animal models of smoking reduction to examine variables associated with compensatory smoking, and 3) animal models of behavioral treatments for nicotine dependence. Activities would include training in the use of a variety of animal models (e.g., drug self-administration, intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS), drug discrimination and other operant schedules of food maintained-behavior). Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree and a background in neuro- and/or behavioral pharmacology. MMRF is an affiliate of the University of Minnesota located in downtown Minneapolis, 5 minutes from the main University campus.
