| Research Associate Position, Center for Compulsive Behavior and Addiction, Rush University Medical Center |
|
Interested in joining a dynamic group of biomedical scientists who are researching how HIV/AIDS and cocaine abuse interact on the brain? We are looking for an energetic and skilled electrophysiologist.
If you are such a person, and have a Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences, or an M.D. or M.S. degree with research experience, please consider the joint laboratories of Dr. Xiu-Ti Hu and Dr. T. Celeste Napier in the Center for Compulsive Behavior and Addiction, Rush University Medical Center. These highly interactive, NIH-funded labs provide a multidisciplinary research environment located in the modern, state-of-the-art Cohn Research building on the Rush University campus within the Illinois Medical District of downtown Chicago.
This project will involve using a rat model of human cocaine abuse to determine if the neurotoxic effects of HIV viral proteins are exaggerated in cortical neurons (the study does not involve working with viruses). Cocaine abuse is frequent among those afflicted with AIDS, and these individuals show more deficits in cortical brain function than drug-free AIDS patients or HIV-negative cocaine abusers. We are studying the mechanisms that may contribute to the cocaine addiction/neuroAIDS co-morbidity, and results from this work will help develop novel treatments for this critical health problem.
